Powerfull earthquake in japan high alert stunami 7.4 sock
A tsunami alert has been issued following a powerful earthquake off the east coast of Japan.
The US Geological Survey says the magnitude 7.4 quake was recorded at a depth of 33 kilometres, 333km from Sendai.
A warning for a one-metre tsunami was issued for the coast of the north-eastern Miyagi prefecture, an area badly hit by the March 2011 tsunami that devastated a large swathe of coast, killing thousands.
People have been urged to move to higher ground.
Initial reports put the epicentre near to that of the March 11, 2011 quake that sparked a devastating tsunami.
The quake shook buildings as far away as Tokyo and Shinkansen bullet trains have been suspended between Tokyo and Odawara.
Nuclear plant operator Tokyo Electric Power said there were no reports of further damage at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says there is no risk of a Pacific-wide tsunami from the quake.
